Yesterday, I had the unique opportunity to participate in an Invite Only Developer Roundtable hosted by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, along with Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever and COO Brad Lightcap. As the CEO of Loadmill, a startup that simplifies software testing through AI, this event offered me an intriguing perspective.
Being part of a user feedback session was a role reversal for me. I often lead similar sessions as a startup founder, so it was insightful to participate from a user's perspective. Each question asked, in essence, reflected more on the person asking rather than the answer itself. It was a refreshing lens through which to view such an event, and it provided me with a new perspective on user engagement.
The OpenAI team's comprehensive knowledge of their product, spanning from high-level concepts down to the smallest technical details, was evident throughout the session. It underscored their mastery of the technology they've built and continue to shape.
An important theme of the roundtable was the reputation problem some companies face when using OpenAI. Businesses are more than willing to trust established services like AWS, Hubspot, or Intercom with sensitive data but hesitate when it comes to processing it through the OpenAI API. Altman acknowledged this issue and ensured that they're working on solving the legal issues, particularly in Europe, and planning a substantial marketing campaign to combat this perception.
The roundtable also touched upon future developments on OpenAI's roadmap. Anticipated enhancements include larger context sizes, tuning abilities, and updates to DALL-E, among other DX enhancements. The potential for a single-GPU GPT3 for edge computing could be a game-changer.
Among the many innovative concepts discussed, automatic prompt tuning stood out. This approach involves applying GPT to itself repeatedly until a high-quality, generic prompt is produced. This indicates a promising and unique direction for the future of prompting.
The chatGPT model was another focus of our discussion. Altman confirmed that the model is not continuously updated, which should ensure consistent results. However, OpenAI is exploring the possibility of a production bug leading to occasional inconsistencies.
Lastly, we explored the viability of open-source alternatives and domain-specific models. While it may seem appealing to train your own model, the strides that OpenAI is making in this field make that choice less attractive. The technological lead that OpenAI has established seems challenging to overcome.
